JNU student Najeeb Ahmed has been missing for over six months now and Delhi Police is still clueless about his whereabouts and well-being. Desperate to make a breakthrough in the case, investigating officers have now approached mosques in the national capital and the neighbouring states.
The police have met Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid in Chandni Chowk and requested him to make announcements about Najeeb during prayers, reported Indian Express. “We asked the imam to request people to share any information about Najeeb. We have even requested imams of other mosques in Delhi, neighbouring areas and some cities in Uttar Pradesh to make regular announcements,” a senior officer told the daily.
With the Delhi police yet to make any inroads into the case, Najeeb’s kins have also expressed their angst over police investigation. His family members, meanwhile, said they have lost faith in police. “We are as clueless about Najeeb now as we were on the first day,” his brother, Mujeeb, said.
On Friday, the Delhi High Court also rapped police department over the manner of its probe into the disappearance of 28-year-old. The bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Deepa Sharma said the agency appeared to be looking for an “escape route” and “beating around the bush”.
Referring to the forensic analysis reports of the Najeeb’s laptop and call records that the police had filed in a sealed cover but had not shared with its own lawyer , the court said that the conduct of the police showed it was trying to sensationalise the matter or looking for a way out as it was filing reports in sealed covers and “there was nothing confidential, damaging or crucial” in them.
