The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted the unconditional apology tendered by the controversial Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for making insensitive comments on Bulandshahr rape case.

The top Court had earlier asked the 68-year-old Azam Khan to submit an affidavit tendering an apology for his remark on Bulandshahr gangrape case.
Azam Khan statements on the Bulandshahr rape case created massive uproar after he claimed that the rape case was a “political conspiracy”.
Azam Khan’s lawyer in his defence had said that his comments were not meant to hurt the sentiments and were not directed to the family members. However, the court did not seem convinced and slammed Khan for making such a statement.
Earlier this year, the court had affirmed that it will inspect the remark and check whether such comments from a person who is holding a public office can create distress among the victims. It also asserted that it will scrutinise if the comment “defeats constitutional sensitivity” and fair probe into the case.
The court had also handed over the case to CBI and at one point asking them to send Khan a notice not being present in one of the hearings.
On 29 July, a mother and her minor daughter were raped in the fields near on the highway in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh.
