In a bid to end the practice of triple talaq, around one million Muslims, mostly women have signed a petition to ban the controversial method of giving divorce .
The campaign which has received huge support, is initiated by an Islamic organisation, the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) which received as many as one million signatures from Muslims all over India to stop the practice of triple talaq. MRM is associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
As reported by ANI, the voice against the ban has gain momentum in the past few days and it has been linked with the Bharatiya Janata Patry’s lanslide victory in Utttar Pradesh assembly elections. Out of total 403 seats, BJP won 312. As per the recent data, the Muslims constitutes 18.5 % of population in the state.
Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had said that the practice of Triple Talaq violates the rights of the Muslim women, further affirming that “No Personal Law Board is above the Constitution.”
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has spoken against proposed ban on Triple Talaq calling the move as an interference with Islam. giving reason for the practice the law board said that rather killing a woman it is better to give her a divorce. It also added “The rights bestowed by religion can’t be questioned in a court of law,”.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a public meeting had said “The debate should be between Muslims who want reforms and those who do not want reforms,”.
Urging people to not make this issue a political one, PM said, “I request people who participate in TV debates not to make women rights into Muslim-Hindu issue. Women’s right is a development issue. Don’t turn it into a political matter. Let’s take proper measures to give equal rights to women as well,”
