Reports of man molesting woman during stampede at Elphinstone station untrue: Police

At least 22 people were killed and over 35 were injured during a tragic stampede at Mumbai's Elphinstone station

On October 1, 2017, it was reported that a woman fighting for her life was molested by a bystander during the tragic stampede at Mumbai’s Elphinstone station. A number of publications including InUth carried the story that was originally published by The Hindu. However, police investigations have reportedly revealed that the allegations of molestation are untrue.

Following reports of molestation, the police affirmed that they would initiate an inquiry into the disturbing incident. The police have now claimed that the man in question here was not molesting but trying to help her. The police stated that the man was making an effort to drag her out of the railing where she got stuck during the stampede.

“The victim got stuck in between the railing of the bridge. The commuter tried to drag her out. He rested her body on his foot and was trying to pull her and grabbed her by her chest. His intention was to save her and not molest her,” a senior police official was quoted as saying. The police are also gathering few more video clips to reach a final conclusion. The man in the video has not been identified as yet.

The video clip, which alleged that an unidentified man made an attempt to molest a woman who reached out for help before she breathed her last, had gone viral on social media. A number of people expressed their disappointment and pointed the sorry state of affairs in the country.

At least 22 people were killed and more than 35 were left injured in a stampede that took place on foot overbridge that linked Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations. The incident occurred at the peak hours when 4 trains reportedly arrived at the station at the same time leading to massive chaos. The injured were rushed to KEM hospital where as many as 15 people were declared brought dead by the doctors.
