Religious belief vs personal choice: Twitter reacts on Allahabad HC telling UP CM it can’t impose beef ban

'Food, that is, conducive to health cannot be treated as a wrong choice,' read the High Court statement

After the recently formed government in Uttar Pradesh ordered a ban on illegal slaughterhouses, Allahabad High Court on April 5 said that complete prohibition can not be put on beef as it not only prevent people from food choices but also effect their livelihood.

Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi and justice_Sanjai Harkauli on April 3 said, “To provide an immediate check on unlawful activity should be simultaneous with facilitating the carrying of lawful activity, particularly that relating to food, food habits and vending thereof that is undisputedly connected with the right to life and livelihood.”

The statement released by the Allahabad High Court stated , ‘Food, that is, conducive to health cannot be treated as a wrong choice.’

State government in its response said that it is not planning to shut all the meat shops but is banning those which are running illegally.

Many meat shop owners in the capital and other parts held previous government responsible for it they said that SP government did not renew their licences and now their legal businesses have turned illegal. Meat shop owners said due to apathy of authorities the crackdown on slaughterhouses have hit their livelihood.

Few days back, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had directed police officials to prepare an action plan for closing down of slaughter houses across state.  He also ordered to put a blanket ban on smuggling of cows and said zero tolerance would be exercised in this regard.

However Allahabad High Court ruling received mixed views:

@TimesNow Yes indeed! Not everyone holds cows as sacred. One’s religious beliefs and practices should not be imposed on others.
