Reliance Jio’s lifetime free voice call offer gets TRAI’s approval

TRAI says yes to Jio's lifetime free voice call offer

It’s party time for Reliance Jio as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has given a green signal to the company’s lifetime free voice call offer.

In a letter to the telecom operators, the regulatory body said that the tariff plans offered by the company could not be considered as ‘IUC non-complaint, predatory and discriminatory’ to the present rules as alleged by telecom companies including Airtel and Vodafone.

The company, however, will have to pay 14 Paisa per minute for every outgoing call from its network to any other network.

“This (Trai’s letter) clearly establishes the fact that all the tariffs offered by RJIL are in compliance with the prevailing regulations. A key feature of RJIL’s tariff packs is free-voice calling for Local, STD and National roaming for all times,” Jio said in a statement, reported PTI.

The rival companies had also challenged the free data service offered by Jio beyond 90 days. However, this offer has been set aside by the regulatory body. As a part of the revised offer, Jio’s free services including unlimited mobile data will be available to the subscribers till December 31, 2016. However, new subscribers will be able to avail Jio’s Welcome Offer till December 3, which is consistent with the company’s promotional scheme.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman, Mukesh Ambani had stormed the Indian telecom market last month by launching India’s most ambitious mobile network- Reliance Jio. As a part of its introductory scheme, Jio offered mobile data at the cost of Rs 50 per GB, which is the lowest in the world. Apart from innovation data schemes, Jio also introduced special schemes for students and young entrepreneurs. Ambani had said that Jio was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital India dream.
