#PowerToThem: At A Mass Wedding In UP, This Lesbian Couple Got Married

The couple was busted when the family of one of the girls, who pretended to be a groom, started looking for their daughter

While the LGBTQ+ community in India still awaits its matrimonial rights, a lesbian couple in Uttar Pradesh tied the knot at a mass wedding ceremony in Bhimnagari.

According to a Times of India report, one of the girls dressed as a male to register themselves as bride and groom at the event on April 16. Reportedly, the girls belong to Dalit and Brahmin families from Redhi Bagia region and had been in a relationship for a long time before the wedding.

Following the wedding ceremony, where they received presents from the Bhimnagari Organizing Committee, the same-sex couple moved to a rented accommodation.

The couple was busted when the family of one of the girls, who pretended to be a groom, started looking for their daughter. According to the report, they were informed that their daughter was now living as a boy with another girl.

When the families sought the help of the police, the girls stood firm on their decision to stay together, leaving police officials clueless about any ensuing action to be undertaken. A fake family was also presented at the event to act as the real one, the report added.

Speaking to TOI, the Etmaduddaula police station officer stated, “Both the women have been sent to the concerned magistrate to register their statement. No case has been registered in the police station, the magistrate will only decide the matter.”

The two girls had known each other from college and had decided to get married in Bhimnagari, where five-day-long mass wedding ceremonies are organised every year on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti.
