Post hung assembly, BJP is going ahead and claiming power in Manipur

Congress emerged as the single largest party in the Manipur polls although, it failed to gain majority resulting in hung assembly

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a historic win in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur threw up a hung assembly. Even though BJP finished second, the party is reportedly going ahead and staking claim to form a government in Manipur.

The party has also sought an appointment with the governor Najma Heptulla. BJP general secretary Ram Madhav had affirmed that the party has the required numbers and support to form a government adding that the results clearly showed that the people of the state were not supporting the Congress.

Meanwhile, the Congress has is strategising a plan to form a government in the state. In what came as huge shocker,

‘Iron Lady’ of Manipur and PRAJA (Peoples’ Resurgence and Justice Alliance) chief, Irom Chanu Sharmila on Saturday lost from Thoubal constituency, where she was contesting against incumbent Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh where he managed to win only 90 votes.

The state, which has been under the control of the long-reigning Indian National Congress (INC), witnessed a shift as voters displayed an affinity to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, BJP’s efforts were in vain as Congress emerged as the single largest party in the Manipur polls although, it failed to gain majority.

As opposed to what several exit polls conducted by the various media houses suggested, BJP failed to be on the top spot. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was also reelected as the chief of Congress Legislative Party. The Congress has also urged the Non-BJP MLAs to extend their support to the Congress to form a government.
