Punjab’s former CM Surjit Singh Barnala passes away at 91

Barnala was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) recently where he took his las breathe today.

Former Chief Minister of Punjab Surjit Singh Barnala passed away on January 14 after a prolonged illness at PGI, Chandigarh. He was 91-years-old.

Barnala was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) recently where he took his las breathe today.

He served as Punjab’s Chief Minister from 1985 to 1987 and had remained Governor of Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and also a minister at the Centre.

Barnala was born on October 21, 1925, in Ateli Haryana. He was a part of Quit India Movement in 1942. In 1952, Barnala contested the election for the first time but lost. He was elected to Parliament in 1977 and was appointed as agriculture minister in the Morarji Desai government. Barnala was instrumental in setting up Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
