‘People don’t want Sasikala to be TN CM, will float new party’, says Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa

Jayalalithaa's niece, Deepa Jayakumar announced that she will contest elections and expressed displeasure over Sasikala elevation in AIADMK.

Amid uproar over Sasikala Natarajan being elevated as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, former TN CM Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar came out to tell that people of the state do not want Sasikala to be the Chief Minister. Asserting that she will herself contest elections, Deepa slammed Sasikala’s elevation saying that it will be sad if she becomes the Chief Minister.

She further asserted that she will also float a new party adding that she wants to complete tasks her aunt Jayalalithaa left behind. She had recently announced that she would make her foray into state politics and said that she can’t accept anyone else in Jayalalithaa’s position. As her supporters raised slogans hailing her outside, Deepa told the media that she had no doubts about the circumstances surrounding the death of Jayalalithaa in December.

A graduate in English literature with a Masters in International Journalism from Cardiff University, Deepa said there were two views on her political journey.  Jayakumar is the daughter of Jayalalithaa’s brother. There were reports of friction within the family after Jayalalithaa adopted Sasikala’s nephew. She apparently did not meet Jayalithaa since 2007. She has also alleged that she was not allowed to meet Jayalalithaa when she was undergoing treatment in Apollo hospital in Chennai.

Jayalalithaa breathed her last on December 5, 2016, after she suffered the cardiac arrest hours after her party told media that she has fully recovered and will be returning home soon. Deepa said Jayalalithaa’s death was a shock but before the shock could subside, changes had happened in the political space.

This comes days after Sasikala was elected as the Legislature party leader. AIADMK soon announced that she will replace O Panneerselvam and be the chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
