In what could be a major setback, an Assam court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the defamation case filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from the state. The court issued a warrant against Kejriwal after he failed to appear before the court despite receiving a summon.
According to reports, Kejriwal filed a petition in the court seeking more time to appear before the court. However, the court dismissed the petition and issued a warrant against the Delhi CM. The case was registered by Surjya Rongphar, a BJP leader and Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) over Kejriwal alleged defamatory tweet against PM Narendra Modi. The BJP leader alleged that Kejriwal had made defamatory comments against PM Modi by raising questions on the Prime Minister education qualifications and terming his degree as fake.
Kejriwal lawyers filed plea asserting that the Delhi CM will not be able to make it to the court due to the upcoming Municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls. Last year Kejriwal had tweeted that Modi was only 12th pass and that his other degrees were “fake.” Rongohar termed the allegations as “false” and “baseless” and lodged a complaint against him.
Kejriwal recently found himself at the receiving end of criticism after he allegedly requested the state government to allow him to use public money to pay his legal bills in the defamation case filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who has sought Rs 10 crore damages from Arvind Kejriwal. Renowned lawyer Ram Jethmalani who is defending Kejriwal asserted that he will treat Kejriwal as a “poor client” if didn’t have the money to pay his fees.
