No liquor shops on state highways from April: Supreme Court

Buying liquor shops on the state highways is going to get really tough starting April.

The Supreme Court on Thursday called for a ban on the liquor shops on state highways across the country from April.

According to reports, the move has been taken to avoid a number of road mishaps that occur on the state and national highways. The court had earlier said they were planning and coming up with a plan to deal with the drunk driving menace.

The apex court in its order said all the licenses of liquor shops in and around the National Highways in all the states would be closed.

However, the apex court, asserted that they can operate till the time they were having their licenses. They will, however, not be allowed to renew their licenses.

The court further said that all liquor banners and advertisements have to be taken down.

The decision came in response to a plea filed by by NGO  ‘Arrive Safe’ who had claimed that over 1.41 lakh people had died in the road mishaps out of which most of them were cases of drunk driving.
