Businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help Surinder Koli were sentenced to death today after being convicted in one of the 2006 serial Nithari rape and murder cases.
On July 22, Pandher and Koli were convicted of kidnapping, raping and killing 20-year-old Pinky Sarkar. A special CBI court in Ghaziabad described the case as “rarest of the rare”.
According to reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation chargesheet stated that Koli had confessed to having lured Pinky, who was returning from work, into the house on October 5, 2006. She was later killed.
With Pandher and Koli back in the news, the Noida serial murders, infamously known as the Nithari killings has once again come under the spotlight. Here’s all you need to know about the gruesome murders:
- It is believed that the killings started in 2005. However, it was only in 2006, the incident came to light after some villagers claimed that they saw the remains of the children in the drain behind the infamous D-5 house of Pandher.
- Reports of some children missing from Nithari turned into the most gruesome serial killings in India. Moninder Singh Pandher and Surender Koli were detained for questioning. After Koli’s confession, the police started the investigation.
- On December 29, 2006, police discovered at least eight skeletal remains of children from the drain of a house in Nithari, Noida. The two suspects – owner of the house Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help Surinder Koli were immediately arrested.

- On December 30, more skeletons tumbled out of the drainage, and the number rose up to 19 skeletal remains. On January 5, 2007, both the accused in the Nithari killings were taken to Gandhinagar for extensive narco-analysis test by Uttar Pradesh police and after a lot of pressure, the UP government handed over the case to the CBI on January 10.
- The CBI filed its first chargesheet in March 2007, in which it slapped lesser charges on Pandher. While, Koli was charged of committing all the murders besides kidnapping and rape. On December 13, a special CBI court in Ghaziabad framed charges against Pandher for the rape and murder of two teenagers.

- On February 12, 2009, the special judge of CBI pronounced Pandher and Koli guilty of rape and murder. The next day Pandher and Koli were sentenced to death for rape and murder of 14-year-old Rimpa Halder, one of 19 victims in the Nithari serial killings.
- On September 11, 2009, the Allahabad High Court acquitted Pandher in Rimpa Haldhar murder case. But, Surinder Koli`s death sentence was upheld. After years of trial, the CBI court convicted Mohinder Pandher and Surinder Koli on July 22, 2017.
