Man who chopped wife’s body into 70 pieces gets life term

The additional and session court in Dehradun found software engineer Rajesh Gulati guilty and gets a life term in the murder of his wife. In one of the heinous crime that took place seven years ago, Rajesh killed his 36-year-old wife, Anupama and chop her body into 70 pieces, stashing the parts in a deep freezer for two months.

The verdict, therefore, brings the closure in a seven-year-old case which shook Uttarakhand. Vinod Kumar, the additional district judge found him guilty under section 302 (murder) and 201 ( causing the disappearance of evidence) of the IPC. Soon after the verdict, Rajesh was taken out of the court by policemen.

The couple got married in 1999 and moved to the US, but in 2008 they came back to India and started living in a two-room rented house at Prakash Nagar in Dehradun Cantonment. After their return to India, the couple started fighting often. Anupama also charged Rajesh with an extramarital affair with a woman from Kolkata.

During one such argument on October 17, Rajesh slapped his wife who hit her head against the wall and fell unconscious. Scared that once she gains her conscious, she will file a complaint with the police, Rajesh smothered her with the pillow.

The next morning he brought a deep freezer, cut Anupama’s body into pieces and kept the parts in the freezer. Whenever his twins or relatives would ask about her, he would say that she is out. It was only when Anupama’s brother Sujan got suspicious of Rajesh, he filed a complaint with the police. After which police raided Rajesh’s house and found several body parts of the body in the freezer.
