'Kids have smartphones', says Twitter as govt bans condom ads on TV between 6 am to 10 pm

While some out and out criticised the move, others on social media termed it a 'good step'

Perhaps in a move to make our younger ones ‘sanskari’ and to avoid ‘indecent and inappropriate viewing’, the government strictly asked TV channels not to air condom ads between 6 AM and 10 PM. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned condom ads from airing in the day and restricted them to be aired only during the wee hours of the night after the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) requested the ministry to take a call on such ads and their telecast timing.

Terming the condom ads “indecent especially for children” which can create “unhealthy practices” among them, the Ministry in an advisory said,

It has been brought to the notice of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that some channels carry advertisements of condoms repeatedly which are alleged to be indecent especially for children.

The move has, however, received mixed responses. On one hand a few have welcomed this move, while others have slammed the government, reasoning that such a move would hardly filter out what children view.

As soon as the news broke, people took to microblogging site Twitter and poured their hearts out on the matter. Quickly, Twitter was flooded with hilarious responses. Check out some of the epic tweets here:

While some took a jibe at the government, others came to the fore to support the move.

In September this year, a condom advertisement featuring Sunny Leone drew protests in Surat from a right-wing group, Hindu Yuva Vahini. The ad, which was displayed on hoardings across the city, carried a message in Gujarati—”play but with love”—and was widely shared on social media.
