Kanpur building collapse: 3-year-old girl rescued after 24 hours, reunites with father

At least 6 people were killed after a building collapsed in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh. The rescue operation went on for over 2 days.

A day after an under construction building collapsed in the Jajmau area of the Kanpur city, a 3-year-old girl along with her father were rescued alive from the debris. Both father and the daughter sustained minor injuries in the incident and both are safe, as confirmed by a senior rescue official.

On February 1, after the building collapsed, 9 people were reportedly killed and several others were trapped. Rescue operations were carried out by the army and other rescue teams. The NDRF also had to be rushed to the site of the incident in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh.

Last night, D D Verma, OSD Kanpur Development Authority (KDA), complained about the owner of the collapsed building, Mehtab Alam, in the Chakeri Police station as Alam was allegedly getting the building illegally constructed. For this illegal construction, KDA had already sent him a notice on November 23, 2016, but he didn’t respond to it. However, on February 1, the construction again started after illegally breaking the seal.

On the basis of the complaint, a FIR was registered against Alam and his contractor under relevant sections of IPC including 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), said, Senior Superintendent of Police Aakash Kulhari.

Police on Thursday raided Alam’s house but could not find him on reaching the house. Alam and his contractor both are absconding, he said. Meanwhile, KDA Secretary Jaishree Bhoj has constituted a two-member team to probe the incident within seven days. Two more bodies were recovered on Thursday at 11.30 am.

Two more bodies were recovered on Thursday at 11.30 am while the rescue operation continued for the second days well as a dozen of people still were expected to to be trapped under the debris and hence the NDRF team was unable to use the JCB machine.

Many nearby houses were affected. There were around 100 labourers inside the building when the incident occurred. There are also reports of women and children being trapped under it.
