One Indian fisherman killed, four injured after Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opens fire at them

As per the data, there are around 85 Indian fishermen and 128 fishing boats in Lankan custody

Indian fisherman from Rameswaram died and four others left injured after Sri Lankan Navy allegedly shot at group of fishermen who were fishing between Danushkodi and Katchatheevu.

According to the reports, deceased has been identified as 22-year old man who was fishing near the islet with other fishermen when Navy personnel from Sri Lanka reached the spot and allegedly opened fire.

The body of fisherman was brought to Rameswaram and a case has been registered in a local station.

President of Rameswaram Fishermen Association, P Sesuraja told PTI,  around 2000 fisherman where fishing within Indian waters when navy officials from Sri Lanka arrived at the spot. He alleged that not even a warning shot was fired by those the Sri Lankan official.

In the wake of such incidents, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi few days back and raised the topic of frequent apprehension of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy.

“Unfortunately, even before the sense of relief following the release of the 51 fishermen could fully set in and the released fishermen reached our shores, the Sri Lankan navy has yet again resorted to its harsh and unjust tactic of apprehending Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu while peacefully pursuing their avocation in the traditional fishing waters of the Palk Bay,” he wrote in the letter.

Reacting on the incident, MK Stalin said, “High time Central government reacts strongly to this problem, can not be a mute spectator”
