The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) announced the Class 12 Board results on June 6 and only 52.95% of students were able to pass the exams. Out of the 11.92 lakh candidates, 5.5 lakh students (around 47%) were not able to clear their papers. A total of 44% students cleared in Science, 82% in Commerce stream and 42% students passed the Arts stream examination successfully.
Although, the pass percentage of this year’s Class 12 board results were up by around 17% from last year as only 35% of the students were able to pass in 2017.
The toppers from each stream were girls, with this year’s NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) topper Kalpana Kumari also having topped Class 12 from science stream. She scored a total of 434 marks out of 500 (86.8%). The boys fared better than girls with a pass percentage of 30.47 — 8 points higher than girls.
The best performing districts were Gopalganj, West Champaran and Patna with more than 95 percent of commerce students clearing their exams. The worst were Jehanabad, Gaya and Arwal with less than 41 percent arts students scoring the requisite 30% in theory and 40% in practicals to clear their exams.

The five toppers of Class 12 will get a scholarship of Rs 1,500 per month from the state government, depending on the duration of the course they would pursue.
A few on social media expressed concern regarding the abysmal pass percentage of students appearing for board exams in Bihar over the years.

Many also raised doubts over how Kalpana Kumari could top both NEET and Class 12 board exams after which BSEB gave a clarification that there is no provision of minimum attendance in schools.
