Hyderabad Teacher Thrashes 9-Year-Old Student For Not Plaiting Her Hair

The incident took place on July 19, when the class teacher Seetalakshmi allegedly thrashed Vinoothna for wearing a ponytail instead of plaiting her hair

A nine-year-old student was thrashed by her teacher at a private school in Himayatnagar, Hyderabad for allegedly attending school without plaiting her hair. According to the parents of the girl, a student of class IV, the incident occurred on July 19, when she fashioned a ponytail for school.

Reportedly, plaited hair is part of the dress code for Oxford Grammar School. So, when the student arrived at school, her class teacher, Seetalakshmi, beat her for wearing a ponytail and even dared her to complain to her parents.

The incident took place on July 19, when the class teacher Seetalakshmi allegedly thrashed Vinoothna for wearing a ponytail instead of plaiting her hair. Further, the teacher allegedly challenged her to complain to her parents as usual.

“She beat her badly, she caught hold of her neck and pushed her outside the class and said, ‘you have a habit of complaining about teachers to your parents, right? go tell them now,'” the mother Nandini alleged while speaking to The News Minute, adding that there were bruises on her daughter’s hands and faces.  The school reportedly defended the teacher’s actions by saying that the student hadn’t done her homework.

Nandini also alleged similar instances have happened in the past, however, the school had assured that their teachers would be trained against assaulting students. “We never beat up our kid. If she did not adhere to their rules, shouldn’t the teacher complain about it to us, or write about it in the school diary, so that we take corrective measures? Beating a kid is inhuman,” the mother added.

The parents also reached out to Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS), a child welfare NGO that approached the Hyderabad Commissioner and filed a complaint against the teacher.

According to a PTI report, the school administration suspended the teacher on Saturday.

The school said: “We regret the incident and it as unfortunate that it took place in our school. On insistence of the parent the management has suspended the science teacher.”
