In what was a major embarrassment for Pakistan, the country’s officials while presenting the rich history of the country exhibited a photo of Delhi’s Red Fort with the Indian flag atop at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) event in Beijing. The Pakistani officials claimed that it was actually a fort in Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. The faux pas was clearly evident as the fort had Indian flag fluttering over it.
According to several media reports, the Pakistan officials while tracing its history and lauding the Mughals claimed on an international forum that the historic monument was in Lahore. It must be noted that India and Pakistan are the newest entrants to the SCO. India also reportedly put up exhibits from the Mughal era including pictures of Taj Mahal in Agra while enumerating the historic monument.
“These are masterpieces from the time of the brilliant Mughal civilisation, which reached its height during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan,” Times of India quoted excerpts from the presentation as saying. They also reportedly went on to describe the specification and the beauty of the monument.
Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, Indian envoy to China Vijay Gokhale along with the ambassadors of Pakistan Masood Khalid and other Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members were also present at the event that took place on June 14. The eight-member group involves China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan after the newest entry of India and Pakistan.
It is being reported that the reason why both India and Pakistan were exhibiting pictures from the Mughal era is because interestingly Mughal ruler Babur came from Central Asia. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan displayed an exhibit of the mausoleum while highlighting that it was built during the time of Timur (Tamerlane) from 1389 to 1405.
