Election Commission partners with Facebook to register young voters

EC partners with Facebook to encourage youth to vote

In a move to encourage the youth of the country to participate in the democratic process of voting, the Election Commission of India has partnered with tech giant Facebook to run an online voter registration drive.

“Facebook is collaborating with the Election Commission and the office of Chief electoral officers in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand for the first time in the country to run a voter registration drive,” Chief Electoral Officer Radha Raturi told PTI.

Users can click on ‘Register Now’ button on their Facebook profiles to apply for registration of a new voter. The button will direct the Facebook users to the National Voters’ Services Portal, wherein they can apply for the registration of a new voter, correct the entries in their electoral roll and even know the location of the election booth nearest to them.

The feature will be available for people on Facebook in Punjab on October 6, for those in Manipur on October 7, for those in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on October 8 and in Goa on October 9.

The office of Uttarakhand has also come up with its own official Facebook page to connect with the young voters. The Page aims to provide online services to all eligible voters and develop live interaction platform in the near future.
