Cyclone Vardah: Here’s how you can help distressed animals
While protecting yourselves during the time of distress make sure you prepare well to help the animals cope with the possible disaster.
As the severe cyclonic storm Cyclonic Vardah makes a landfall in the Chennai,heavy Rains and strong winds have lashed the city. Due to cyclonic weather over Chennai airport, flights are diverted and departures are delayed. Both the states have been put on high alert with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) monitoring the situation real close.
However, amid all of this chaos what happens to the animals that are also being affected due to the cyclonic storm? A number of animals could be displaced, trapped and desperately looking for relief in the wake of calamity.
World Animal Protection has released a bunch of advice for pet and livestock owners to help people prepare and protect their animals and themselves.
As per their guidelines, These are few of the things you can do to help the animals and even prepare them for the possible disaster:
PET OWNERS
- You must store non-perishable pet food in an airtight, waterproof container enough to last for 3 days.
- Like food, you will also need to store water for at least three days of water for your pet. Also, animals tend to drink more water when distressed.
- Make sure you have medicines stored to suit your pets needs.
- Keep all the medical and vaccination records in a waterproof container with their name and you number just if in case you have to drop your pet to a shelter for foster care.
- Keep a first aid kit ready. Also, talk to your pets doctor and speak to about your pets requirements.For example : Tick/flea prevention, antibiotic ointment and saline solution.
FOR LIVESTOCK OWNERS:
- First and foremost, if possible, get your animals to higher ground or a designated safe place. Also, Bring a 72 hour supply of suitable food and water along with a medical kit. Prepare an emergency kit ready which includes your name and phone numbers.
- If in case, you have to leave them behind in case of an emergency, move them to a higher ground and keep enough food and water supply for them to survive through the difficult period.
- Do not tie them while evacuating. Untie them so that they can save themselves and run if the floodwater rise.
- Recheck fencing once you are back as they might have damaged due to the calamity. Also, bring along fresh water with you.
