Cyclone Vardah makes landfall in Chennai, heavy rain lashes city: Top 10 developments

North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh have been put on high alert in view of the severe cyclonic storm with the government monitoring situation closely.

Coastal regions of Chennai is gearing up and taking strong precautionary measure as Cyclonic storm Vardah is expected to make a landfall in parts of Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh today.

Both the states have been put on high alert with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) monitoring the situation real close.The landfall is expected to be close to the Chennai city. According to reports, Chennai has received 57 mm of rain during the last 11 hours.

Here are top 10 developments on Cyclone Vardah:

  1. Heavy Rains and strong winds have lashed Chennai. Due to cyclonic weather over Chennai airport, flights are diverted and departures are delayed. It is expected to make land fall close to Chennai between 2-4 PM.

2. The Tamil Nadu government have asked the people living in Ennore and Palaverkadu to evacuate.

3. Tamil Nadu government has also declared public holiday today in several parts of the states including in Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai & coastal Taluks of Villupuram in view of cyclone Vardah.

4. The MeT director has announced that the tidal wave will be one meter high and people are advised to be in safe places & stick to instructions given by government.

5. The fishermen have also been advised to not venture into sea along and off south South Andhra Pradesh, North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts during next 36 hrs.

6. National Disaster Management Authority, have also asked people to remain in safe places and corporate with the officials.

7. The state government further announced that 7357 people are evacuated to 54 relief centres safely so far.

8.The spokesperson of the Indian navy has affirmed that the ships Shivalik& Kadmatt have set out at sea to provide immediate assistance if required.

9. The army has also been on standby for relief operations.

10. Tamil Nadu government who held a meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority have directed not to venture out of their houses between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
