Contempt case: Justice Karnan calls Supreme Court warrant against him unconstitutional

"It is a caste issue, a Dalit judge is prevented from doing work in a public office which is an atrocity", said Justice Karnan

Soon after the Supreme Court issued bailable warrant against him in the contempt case, Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan on March 10 called the order unconstitutional and said that it has bee issued to ruin his life.

“The bailable warrant issued today will be stayed. They have no locus standi to issue a warrant against me. It is unconstitutional,” CS Karnan told the media.

“On the basis of representation SC issued suo moto contempt without enquiry, discussion or findings,” the judge added.

Despite apex court’s notice Calcutta HC judge CS Karnan refused to appear before SC to face contempt charges.

Karnan further said that he is targeted for being a dalit, The judge said, “It is a caste issue, a Dalit judge prevented from doing work in a public office which is an atrocity. This is an arbitrary order deliberately issued against me in order to ruin my life and career.”

It is for the first time in the history that a contempt notice has been issued against a high court judge. Justiuce Karnan will now have to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 10,000 in the contempt case.
