Can’t allow lives of Muslim women to be destroyed by triple talaq: Modi

Modi said that measures should be taken to give equal rights to women

Amid the ongoing row over triple talaq, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said lives of Muslim women cannot be allowed to be destroyed by triple talaq. “The debate should be between Muslims who want reforms and those who do not want reforms,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Mahoba.

He also urged people not to make triple talaq a political issue and treat it as a development issue. “I request people who participate in TV debates not to make women rights into Muslim-Hindu issue. Women’s right is a development issue. Don’t turn it into a political matter. Let’s take proper measures to give equal rights to women as well,” Modi said.

“I am surprised that for vote bank politics, some parties want to keep Muslim women bereft of their natural rights. Is it fair for a man to say “talaaq” thrice over the phone and ruin a Muslim woman’s life,” Modi asked.

Commenting on the rift within the Samajwadi Party, Modi said the farmers in Mahoba have faced grave injustice as this land is capable of reaping gold but farmers got no water.

He also expressed confidence that people would give absolute majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Taking a jibe at both the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, the Prime Minister said: “On one side, there are those who want to save their family. On the other side, there are those who just want power. While, we are those who just want to save Uttar Pradesh. This land of Uttar Pradesh is our mother, and we won’t let our mother be looted anymore.”
