A married couple from Kerela has alleged that they were denied a room in a hotel in Bengaluru because they belonged to different religions. Shafeek Subaida Hakkim and Divya DV have alleged that the Olive Residency Hotel at Annipuram Main Road in Sudhama Nagar in Bengaluru did not allow them a room because the man was a Hindu and the woman was a Muslim.
As per a report in The News Minute, Shafeek said that the receptionist saw their ID cards, wrote names in the register but then realised they were of different religions. “He asked us if we were married as we follow different religions. When I confirmed that we were in fact married, he refused to give us a single room saying that it is not acceptable for a Muslim and a Hindu to stay together,” Shafeek told The News Minute.
However, when Shafeek questioned the logic behind the decision, he could not give a proper answer and kept saying that since both belonged to different religions, they could not get a room together. Even when Shafeek told the receptionist that he would file a police complaint, he allegedly did not budge. The two have not filed a police complaint yet.
While accepting that he refused the room to the couple, the receptionist said that he did so as he got suspicious due to different religions of the two. In an even strange explanation, he defended himself saying that they do not give rooms to Muslims and Hindus who come together, “because what if they go into the room and hang themselves… Why do we need that trouble,” he told the News Minute.
He claimed that there had been such incidents in the past where people committed suicide in some lodges in the city. He said that he grew up in a village where “Hindus don’t get married to Muslim women, and Muslims don’t get married to Hindu women.”
