President Pranab Mukherjee on March 13 accepted Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s resignation and handed over the charge of Defence Ministry to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in addition to his existing portfolios. Manohar Parrikar is all set to return as the Chief Minister of Goas after receiving support from the local parties.
The governor has invited the BJP to form government in Goa and have asked Manohar Parrikar to prove his majority with 15 days of taking oath as the Chief Minister of the state.
A day after Goa threw a hung assembly, Parrikar met the Goa governor along with other BJP MLAs staking claim to form a government in the state. Goa Forward party who won 3 seats in the assembly elections asserted that they would support BJP if Manohar Parrikar returns as CM.

Manohar Parrikar had also addressed a press conference and announced that he had met the governor and said, “This is a mandate given by the people, though we fell short of majority.Together we have completed the magic figure of 21.”
In an unanticipated turn of events, Congress turned out to be a single largest party in Goa as opposed to what the exit polls suggested. The state had witnessed a hung assembly. Congress secured 17 seats and BJP finished second with 13 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party had fielded candidates in 36, AAP in 39, Congress 37, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party 25 and the NCP in 37 seats. However, despite Congress winning more seats, BJP is all set to form a government in the state.
