Amid reports of violence across Delhi and neighbouring areas over Ram Rahim's conviction, here's how a cop allegedly harassed a married couple

Amid raging violence following Dara Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s conviction, a married couple allegedly fell victim to moral police and extortion by local cops in Noida district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday. A policeman reportedly approached a man identified as Sunny Sumanshu who made a stop at a Dhaba in the city after picking up wife from work in Sector 135 and threatened them to file a complaint against them for staying out late in the night.

It was reportedly only 9 pm when the cop allegedly tried to harass them and refused to believe that they were married. The cop allegedly went on threaten them to charge a hefty fine for parking the vehicle on the roadside. “The policeman also said we will be taken to the police station where a case will be registered,” Sumanshu was quoted as saying.

In a bid to avoid further trouble, Sumanshu’s wife Aparna took out everything she had in her purse, Rs 960 and gave it to the cop. No action has been taken against the cop as yet.

The incident comes in the wake of the violence spewed in the neighbouring areas of Noida after a special CBI court convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 15-year-old rape case. Delhi has also witnessed a number of incidents of arson following the dara chief verdict. The Dera Chief’s supporters allegedly set a bus ablaze in northeast Delhi’s Loni chowk. 2 coaches of the Rewa Express stationed at the Anand Vihar Railway station were set on fire in east Delhi.

Taking cognisance of the situation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the government to confiscate Ram Rahim’s properties to compensate for the losses caused by his supporters.
