After human beings, here's why Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government wants cows to be given Unique identification numbers

Amid the ruckus caused by the cow vigilantes or “gau rakshaks,” the central government on April 24 affirmed that every cow also should be given unique identification number just like the people across the country. “Each cow and its progeny across India should get a Unique Identification Number for tracking,” the centre has told the Supreme Court.

Apart from this, the centre has also suggested that special care should be provided to the Cows beyond the age of milking. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government have also affirmed that they will soon come out with schemes to facilitate the farmers in distress.

The government will also reportedly set up helpline numbers that would help people track cows and will also allow people to report any cow trafficking activities. This comes amid reports of a number of attacks across the country by “gau rakshaks”. In a recent incident, a mob attacked and robbed a family of nomadic herders with the assumption that they were taking the cows for slaughter. Five people including a nine-year-old suffered injuries in the entire incident.

Pehlu Khan, a Muslim dairy farmer was lynched to death on suspicion of being a cow smuggler in Rajasthan’s Alwar district.
