Activist Irom Sharmila to tie knot with long-time British partner in July 2017

The marriage will take place in Tamil Nadu however, the exact date has not been confirmed yet

After trying out her luck in 2017 Manipur state elections, right activist Irom Sharmila Chanu has announced her marriage with her long-time British partner Desmond Coutinho. The marriage will take place in the month of July this year however, the exact date has not been confirmed yet.

According to a Times of India report, Irom Sharmila herself confirmed the information and said,”The exact date of our marriage has not been decided yet but we are planning it in July end. The venue will be somewhere in Tamil Nadu.”

Both Sharmila and Desmond have planned to get settled in Tamil Nadu after getting married. As per the reports, Sharmila stated that her would-be husband Desmond will get a visa to stay with her in India. She also informed that the groom is already here in India. She said,”Despite his family originating from Goa, Desmond was born in Tanzania and git the British citizenship. However, I have not informed my family bout the marriage. But soon, I will do so.”

Irom Sharmila has been known for his brave fight against the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for which she went on a 16-year-long fast which she broke on  August 9, 2016. Later, she formed a political party called the People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) and contested state elections. But unfortunately, she lost as she managed to get just 90 votes. After her defeat, she took a break from her political activities and now she has been putting up in Southern Indian region.

She also asserted that after marriage she will continue her struggle but not like a politician but an activist. She had already declared that she won’t be contesting elections anymore.
