39 dead, 54 injured as Hirakhand Express derails in Andhra Pradesh

The incident happened late night on January 21 after eight coaches of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand express derailed at Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh.

39 people were killed and 54 injured after eight coaches of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand express derailed at Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh, as told by officials. The tragic accident happened late at night on January 21.

Chief PRO of East Coast Railway, JP Mishra told PTI, “Engine and seven coaches of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneshwar Express derail at Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh”.

Anil Saxena, additional Director General, PR Railways, said ” Total 54 people have been injured, those with minor injuries have been sent after first aid.One unit of National Disaster Response Force has reached the spot as up and down line between Vijayanagaram-Singhpur has been affected”. Commissioner of Railway Safety, to inquire into Hirakhand express derailment and he will inspect site, he added.

Persons injured are being treated in Rayagada hospital, told Assistant Superintendent of Police, RP Choudhary.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on in his tweet wrote, “The Railway Ministry is monitoring the situation very closely and is working to ensure quick rescue and relief operations”.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for kin of deceased people, Rs 50,000 for seriously injured and Rs 25000 for injured.

Andhra Pradesh CM, Chandra Babu Naidu ensured to provide help in all possible ways and said that he is monitoring the situation.

As per the latest report, one NDRF team from Visakhapatnam is present at the Hirakhand Express derailment site in Andhra, four teams from en route for rescue.

Ministry of East Coast Railway tweeted that total patients attended to at Rayagada district hospital= 32, Trivial injuries= 13, grievous injuries= 4, simple injuries=15.
