Sonu Nigam azaan row: Here’s the count of who backed the singer, who didn’t

Sonu Nigam's early morning tweet on azaan has left Bollywood divided

Ever since he complained about being woken up by azaan in an early morning tweet, playback singer Sonu Nigam has been in news. The entire Bollywood is divided over the controversy even as Nigam defended his comments. While many crticised him for the remark, there were celebs who backed him. Meanwhile, the National Award winning singer while responding to a fatwa issued by a cleric got his head tonsured. Here’s a look at how the industry reacted to the singer’s remark.

Saif Ali Khan recently expressed his views on the ongoing controversy. “I think that tweet was a bit aggressive though, initially. And I do think religion should be a private affair and we should be a secular country,” he said.

Saif’s Rangoon co-actor Kangana Ranaut said she loved everything religious. The actor revealed that she loved the azaan while shooting for Tanu Weds Manu in Lucknow. However, Kangana said that she is only voicing her own opinion and Nigam’s viewpoints should also be considered.

Former Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar said that according to him prayers to god is good, but should not disturb others.”As far as I think, no matter if it’s a Masjid, Mandir, Church or Gurudwara, whatever is the place, do your prayers, but it shouldn’t disturb anyone else,” the veteran lyricist told IANS.

On the other hand, veteran actor Anupam Kher had taken to Twitter and lauded Sonu Nigam when he decided to shave his head. The actor posted,

Bande mein hai dum. Jai Ho Sonu Nigam.:) https://t.co/Fcl4wAf8Ht

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri was the first to support Nigam after the latter’s tweet went viral. He declared his willingness to sponsor a campaign against ‘illegal blaring of Azaan’ from loudspeakers. He even went to an extent of urging Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for a police action in the issue.

I am willing to sponsor a campaign against illegal blaring of Azaan and other prayers on loudspeakers. Suggest a creative hashtag.

Film actor Richa Chadha too supported Nigam on the issue with this tweet.

People will misunderstand your tweet n give it a communal tinge, only those who know you will know you mean not to stoke a fire.

However, there were many who criticised Nigam for his comment on azaan. Pooja Bhatt took an indirect jibe at the singer through her tweet.

I wake each morning to the sound of church bells & the Azaan in a quiet by-lane of Bandra.I light an aggarbatti & salute the spirit of India

Music composer Wajid Khan of Sajid-Wajid duo was not amused by Nigam’s controversial tweet.

On the other hand, singer Mika Singh had a readymade solution for the Indian Idol judge.
