Though we live in an age where online streaming portals like Netflix showcase movies from all over the world, watching cult Bollywood mystery and thriller dramas give a different sense of nostalgic thrill altogether. Bollywood has always had a thing for murder mysteries. From the 1965 release, Gumnaam to the 2017 release Drishyam, the Indian film industry has managed to cash the mystery plot pretty well every single timeThe list of such movies made is endless and one can binge watch them all weekend.

As Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha-starrer thriller drama Ittefaq has hit the theatres, the movie reminded us of some of the hit mystery drama films Bollywood has released over the decades. This Abhay Chopra directorial is a remake of the 90s cult release with the same name starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda in lead roles.

Here we have compiled a list of some of the most iconic murder mysteries and psychological thrillers which will keep you hooked till the very end.

1. Teesri Manzil: 

The cult murder mystery starring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh was one of the greatest hits of its time. Directed by Vijay Anand, this 1966 release’s plot revolved around Asha’s sister Roopa who commits suicide by jumping off from hotel’s third floor.

Teesre Manzil also gave iconic tracks like O Mere Sona Re Sona Re, O Haseena Zulfonwali Jaane Jahan and Aaja Aaja Mein Hoon Pyar Tera. 

The film is a must watch for those who love classic Bollywood movies from the 90s.

2. Woh Kaun Thi?:

Woh Kaun Thi is also an example of another classic Bollywood mystery from the 90s. Starring Sadhana Shivdasani and Manoj Kumar in lead roles, the plot of the film revolves around Sadhana who plays a double role and Manoj Kumar’s experience of déjà vu.

The film also gave popular numbers like Lag Jaa Gale and Naina Barase Rimjhim Rimjhim.

3. Gumnaam: 

Directed by Raja Nawathe, Gumnaam is an adaptation of the novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Starring Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Pran, Helen and Mehmood, Gumnaam was a hit thriller drama of its time.

The story revolves around people who get murdered one after the other in an eerie mansion on a remote island.
Mehmood essays the role of a butler and he received widespread acclaim. Hum Kaale Hain To Kya Hua Dilwale Hain by Mehmood was the hit number of that year.

4. 100 Days:

100 Days was a super-hit thriller drama. Released in 1991, the film is a mystery thriller that follows the events in the life of a woman with extrasensory perception. She sees flashes of her sister’s murder, thus kicking off a series of mysterious events towards finding the killer.

The film also stars Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Laxmikant Berde and Moon Moon Sen.

5. Gupt:

Another mystery drama from the late 90s, Gupt stars Bolly Deol, Kajol and Manisha Koirala. The suspense story revolves around a man who is framed for the murder of his step-father.

6. Manorama Six Feet Under: 

Starring Abhay Deol, Gul Panag, Raima Sen, Sarika and Vinay Pathak, Manorama Six Feet Under is a well-made but underrated murder-mystery. Released in 2007, the film revolves around the character named Manorama. The film shows how Abhay, an amateur detective, lands himself in a complicated case in a small town of Rajasthan.

Manorama Six Feet Under is based on the 1974 Hollywood thriller Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

7. Talaash:

A critically acclaimed movie, Talaash stars Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerjee and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. The story revolves around Kareena’s murder and how Aamir finds the truth about her death.
