Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017: Phoolan Devi’s husband joins Congress

Umed Singh, has again come to the Congress as he was with the party before joining BSP.

As Uttar Pradesh elections are round the corner, joining or leaving a political party becomes a topic of discussion, recent in being a part of the trend is Umed Singh, husband of bandit queen-turned-parliamentarian late Phoolan Devi. Singh, who till recently was with the Bhahujan Samaj party, on Tuesday joined Congress.

Umed Singh, has re-joined Congress after quitting BSP which he joined after resigning from Congress earlier. Welcoming him again in the party Oscar Fernandes said, “After Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi approved his joining, Umed Singh has joined the Congress party. We welcome him into the party-fold. I am sure the party will benefit from him in Uttar Pradesh.”

Joining the BSP in 2012, Singh contested elections from Shahjahanpur in 2014. He has contested Lok Sabha elections three times. It is in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh from where he gets the massive support, as it is this area where Phoolan Devi hailed from.

After being inducted in the Congress once again, Singh said, “I was in Congress earlier and I have realised that all sections can progress only under the Congress,” he added, in 2019, we want a Congress party government to be formed at the Centre.

When asked if he is planning to contest assembly elections in UP, Singh said, “I would follow the directions given to me by the party leaders”.

Two years after stepping out from the prison, late Phoolan Devi was elected as MP from Mirzapur seat in the year 1996, she was re-elected in 1999 election and was the sitting member of Parliament for Mirzapur when she was killed.
