DRDO develops chicken biscuits and mutton bars for soldiers deployed in snow-bound areas

The DRDO has developed nutritious and protein-rich food items for the security personnel deployed at high altitude and snow-bound areas.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed nutritious and protein-rich food items for the security personnel deployed at high altitude and snow-bound areas, Parliament was informed on July 21.

According to news agency IANS, the major food products developed by the DRDO in the last three years and the current year are chicken biscuits, protein rich mutton bar, composite cereals bars, egg protein biscuits, iron and protein rich food bar, chicken kathi rolls and anti-fatigue tulsi bar.

The information was provided by defence minister Arun Jaitley in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

“There is no food production unit in DRDO. However, after developing these products, production technologies have been transferred to various industries for bulk production,” he said, according to the IANS report.

He added that development of nutritional food by DRDO for armed forces was an ongoing process based on their requirements and latest technological research in the area.

Earlier in June, a bullet-proof jacket designed by Indian scientist Dr Shantanu Bhowmick received the union government’s nod. The empowered committee of the Ministry of Defence gave its approval for the bullet-proof jacket, which is made from indigenous ultra modern lightweight thermoplastic technology.

A joint collaboration between the DRDO and defence ministry, this is for the first time in 70 years that the Indian Army will have bullet-proof jacket manufactured completely through indigenous technology.

India presently spends Rs 1.5 lakh on a single jacket used by the military and para-military forces and these jackets are imported from America. But, Dr Bhowmick’s jacket will cost only Rs 50,000 per jacket. That means India will save Rs 20,000 crores every year.
