Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM wins 5 seats in Solapur Municipal Corporation

BJP is leading in 18 wards of the Solapur Municipal Corporation whereas Shiv Sena and Congress are ahead in 13 and 3 wards respectively.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen also known as AIMIM has won 5 seats in Solapur Municipal Corporation. Meanwhile, BJP is leading in 18 wards of the SMC whereas Shiv Sena and Congress are ahead in 13 and 3 wards respectively.

Making a debut in the BMC elections, the party has fielded 59 candidates and it’s being said that it has strong chances of winning at least 6-8 seats especially from the south Mumbai areas including Mumbadevi and Byculla. Reports suggest that AIMIM could even get Grant Road as theirs is the only Muslim candidate in the Muslim dominated area. They are also eyeing for Govandi and Dharavi.

In BMC election, about 2,275 candidates, which include 1,190 males, 1,084 females and one transgender, are in the fray for the 227 seats. 13 political parties, including Shiv Sena, MNS, NCP, Congress and BJP among others, are contesting in this civic body polls. The results of the elections will be out on February 23.

Ealier, AIMIM had promised in its manifesto to provide purified drinking water and cheap meals for poor. The party has also promised to provide employment opportunities to the youth and housing facilities for the weaker sections of the society.

Reacting on the debut of AIMIM, Samajwadi party leader Abu Azmi had said that the party’s entry in the elections will make some difference in the as AIMIM “uses emotional speeches” to gain votes.

2,275 candidates are contesting in 227 municipal wards in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the richest municipal board in India. This time Mumbai has recorded a turnout of 55.28 per cent, which is the highest-ever voter turnout for a municipal election.
