Netflix India signs up comedian Aditi Mittal, demolishes sexist trolls who couldn’t deal with it

Netflix India one-ups the all-male stand up comedy line up of Amazon Prime with just one smooth move. They signed on Aditi Mittal.

Aditi Mittal, one of the best stand-up comics in India, is going to have her own stand-up special “Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say”. And no, not for Amazon Prime but its arch-rival Netflix. After comics like Vir Das, Aziz Ansari, and Hasan Minhaj, Netflix India announced that they will be releasing Aditi Mittal’s stand-up special on July 18 to its members (over 100 million). This comes as a big win for Aditi Mittal who speaks extensively on women and gender culture in India. Especially with the huge stir around gendered comedy recently, Netflix India has one-upped the sexism debate that Amazon Prime is currently still struggling with.

Aditi’s fans have called it a huge slap on Amazon, who earlier this year announced their deal to host 14 comedians ( all male) including famous names like Kanan Gill, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Zakir Khan, and so on from around the country.

However, Mittal is more than elated to be seeing it as a sexism battle. In a statement released by Netflix, Aditi states “Having a platform like Netflix is a dream come true for anyone in entertainment and comedy today. Even while I give this quote for the press release I have to pinch myself to confirm that this is real. The journey of this show has been absolutely exhilarating. I hope Netflix fans all over the world will enjoy the show as much as I have in making it.”

But Twitter’s overjoyed to link it up as battle of sexes. And they have all reasons too. Recently, Aditi Mittal’s lone presence among the bunch of male comedians during the interview with Anupama Chopra for Film Companion caused a much need stir about ‘male-dominated’ comedy circuit in India where female comedians are still struggling to make their presence felt.

Netflix announced this deal earlier today and since then, Twitter’s cheering and rooting for this move and congratulatory wishes are pouring in for Mittal. Some, even trolling Amazon for being gender biased. Check out the tweets:

Aaannnddd Netflix has managed to do what Amazon couldn’t, for whatever reasons. Congrats, @awryaditi. pic.twitter.com/b9xgIK1iAW

Amidst all the excitement, however, there were some people who decided to troll Aditi for not being ‘as good as ‘Biswa or Kenny’. So a female comedian can never be good or bad. She is always good or bad by comparison to their male counterparts. OKAYTHEN. Some even called out Netflix India for ‘lowering its standard’.  Wow. Where do trolls get their confidence from?

But, thankfully Netflix India was more than equipped to deal with them – all with a tinge of sarcasm and lots of humour:

No wonder @NetflixIndia sucks. Koi dhang ke comics lao yaar.

You think you can match up to Biswa and Kenny in @AmazonVideoIN by this? Cute.

Because we like dropping it like it’s hot.
