Denmark Open Final: Kidambi Srikanth beats Lee Hyun-Il to win his 3rd Superseries Premier title

He is on the right track and ticking the right boxes. Indian would be hoping he wins much more superseries titles in the future

Indian ace shuttler Kidambi Srikanth crushed South Korean Lee Hyun II 21-10, 21-5 to win the men’s singles title of the Denmark Open Superseries Premier here on Sunday. This happens to be his third Superseries title, just goes to highlight his coming of age as a badminton player. Earlier, Srikanth defeated Wong Wing Ki Vincent on Saturday in the USD 750,000 Denmark Open Super Series semifinals 21-18, 21-17 to seal a place in the final. The Indian has been in red-hot form, we got a glimpse of that when he upstaged World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen en route to the finale. Srikanth kept the tri-colour fluttering, even after HS Prannoy and Saina Nehwal lost in their respective quarter-finals.

Srikanth had no issues in getting off the blocks, he sprang to a 12-7 lead early on in the first set. It was identical to his semi-finals story, where he had taken an early lead there as well. He had won the first set 21-10 in just 12 minutes. The second game, from its outset, looked very one-sided as Srikanth flew to an 11-1 lead. He then never dropped a gear and comfortably won the second set 21-5 and the championship.

Both the players walked in the finale with a 2-2 record against each other. But Srikanth displayed badminton of the highest level to make it a cakewalk at the end. Srikanth’s opponent was coming off a gruelling 3-set encounter against top-seeded countryman Son Wan Ho.
