CWG 2018: Mirabai Chanu registered an 86-kg lift in the snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk, totalling 196 kg

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu bagged the first gold medal for India at the 21st Commonwealth Games in the women’s 48-kilogram category at Gold Coast, Australia on March 5.

Chanu, who won the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, broke the CWG record thrice in her consecutive attempts.

Chanu lifted a total of 196 kg with a combination of 86 kg (snatch) and 110 kg (clean and jerk).

Marie Hanitra of Mauritius finished a distant second, lifting a total of 170 kg while Dinusha Gomes of Sri Lanka took bronze with 155 kg.

Chanu created a record by lifting 86 kgs in snatch in the 48 kg category.

In 2017, Chanu won gold in the Women’s 48 kg category by lifting a world record 194 kg in total (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean & jerk) in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim, United States.

Hailing from Manipur, Chanu was also awarded the Padma Shri earlier in 2018 for her excellence in the sport.
