Virender Sehwag on toughest bowler he faced: Muttiah Muralitharan scared me off

Sehwag still treated Muralitharan as if he was a rank school level bowler

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag mauled attacks at will and in his prime could scare the bowlers. Sehwag also is the only Indian with two triple tons to his name, an enviable feat. Very few bowlers across the world may have felt what it was like to overpower Virender Sehwag because he always found new ways to score runs and put the bowler off. He has played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is, scoring over 17000 runs across the three formats of the game. These are emphatic numbers any batsman would feel proud of. In a way, Virender Sehwag was instrumental in changing the mindsets of openers as well with his attacking brand of cricket.

In an exclusive chat with India TV, Sehwag revealed that he had fears facing Sri Lankan legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. The right-handed Indian batsman said that it was very difficult to pick Muralitharan and it wasn’t easy at all to bat against him. Sehwag said during the chat show,

Although I was not scared to face any bowler Muttiah Muralitharan’s bowling action, facial expressions scared me off. He used to bowl the doosra which was not easy to pick.

Sehwag had earlier made a revelation of how former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly sacrificed his batting position in order to promote MS Dhoni at the top of the order.

We were experimenting with the batting order at that time. We decided that if we get a good opening partnership then Sourav Ganguly would come at No 3 but if we had a bad opening stand then we would send pinch hitters like Irfan Pathan or MS Dhoni to accelerate the scoring rate.

Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag will be participating in the T20 league that will start soon in the United Arab Emirates at the end of the year. Sehwag is currently a part of the broadcasting team for the India versus Australia series.
