Virender Sehwag fails to answer on India team coach issue

Virender Sehwag, known for his witty comments on social media, chose to remain silent when asked about a separate batting and bowling coach for the national cricket team

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who failed to get the head coach job of the Indian cricket team, on July 18 failed to answer when asked about the India team coach issue at a promotional show in Mumbai. Virender Sehwag, known for his witty comments on social media, chose to remain silent when asked about a separate batting and bowling coach for the national cricket team. The opener was among the shortlisted candidates, who were interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S. Laxman earlier this month.

“If you ask questions on “Umeed India” (the show he was promoting) then I will answer. Thanks,” Sehwag told reporters.

The BCCI on July 11 appointed former Indian captain Ravi Shastri as team India’s new head coach after Anil Kumble resgined from the post following the rift with skipper Virat Kohli. Anil Kumble resigned a day after India lost to Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final held in England.

Anil Kumble took to his official Facebook handle to share a post. In his post he wrote: “…I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the captain had reservations with my ‘style’ and about my continuing as the head coach. I was surprised since I have always respected the role boundaries between captain and coach. Though the BCCI attempted to resolve the misunderstandings between the captain and me, it was apparent that the partnership was untenable, and I therefore believe it is best for me to move on.”

Team India will next tour Sri Lanka. The Virat Kohli-led side is set to play three Test matches, five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and a one-off Twenty20 International during the series.
