Virat Kohli was not the captain in the last 10 overs. Discover full story!

Was MS Dhoni the captain in the last 10 overs?

India beat New Zealand by 6 runs to clinch the series 2-1by winning the 3rd One Day International in Kanpur. Indian captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the architects of the Indian win with the bat, they scored 113 and 147 respectively. The total of 338 proved too much for the Kiwis who put up a valiant effort. They fell 6 runs short but what we saw on the ground during the last 10 overs stunned us. With the Kiwis requiring 9-10 runs per over with wickets in hand, Virat Kohli stepped aside as captain when it came to decision making. He asked his bowlers and fielders to be their own captain and take decisions for themselves.

“I decided that I would let the bowlers do what they want do and that’s why I was calm. There was dew too, just glad the boys pulled through,” Kohli said at the post- match presentation.

“To be fair to the bowlers, the wicket eased out nicely. The ball was coming onto the bat beautifully. But glad the bowlers came out on top: it was like a knock out game for us, and the boys showed their character,” Kohli said.

Giving credit to the visiting team he said, “Credit to New Zealand. They challenged us in all three games and forced us to play our best in every game. Credit to the skill and character they possess.”

“My aim is for the team to win the game and the series, and if I personally do well, then it’s an added bonus.”

Kohli broke records at a premium, he went on to become the only player to score 2000 runs in all three formats and highest runs as a captain in a calendar year.

“Every hundred is special, but what I was working on came off well, and that’s why I am happy. Sanjay Bangar (batting coach) helped my work on some of these things and that’s when results are more pleasing,” he said about the 32nd ton.
