Why We Are All Worried About Prithvi Shaw’s Nasty Injury

It's a shame that we won't be able to see Prithvi Shaw bat at the Adelaide Oval

19-year-old Prithvi Shaw picked up a nasty injury during practice match against Cricket Australia XI on November 30 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In the first session of Day 3 of the match, Shaw tried to take a catch on the boundary ropes and twisted his left ankle 90 degrees inwards. As soon as he hit the ground, he was visibly in pain, holding his left knee.

India’s physio Patrick Farhat rushed to Shaw, along with India’s fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar. The Mumbai youngster was carried off the field by Farhat and Sridhar.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the details as injury led to him being ruled out of the first Test starting December 6. Here’s an excerpt from the press release,

Shaw underwent scans this morning and the reports revealed a lateral ligament injury. Shaw will be unavailable for the First Test against Australia in Adelaide. He will undergo an intensive rehabilitation program to hasten the recovery and be available for selection at the earliest.

Experts and fans too to twitter to express their concern for India’s young prodigy,

Feel for Prithvi Shaw. Hopefully he recovers soon. https://t.co/XVhna2zsUE

Such disappointing news: @PrithviShaw could miss the first 2 Tests. I had fantasised about this tour being for him what 2003-4 was for @virendersehwag. What a blow!https://t.co/AFGQNRz8V5

It’s heartbreaking to watch the man in form, Prithvi Shaw sit out of the first Test against Australia #prithvishaw #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/pdgHZIdthz

Unfortunate. Very unfortunate. Was looking forward to see Shaw bat at Adelaide….not to be. Ligament tear in the ankle can take 3 weeks or more. Perth in doubt too. Wish him a speedy recovery. #AusvInd

Prithvi Shaw’s injury is no doubt a blow for India but hopefully his return won’t be “hastened” as stated in the BCCI statement

Prithvi Shaw ruled out of opening Test against Australia after a lateral ligament injury to his left ankle.

Have to feel for the young man. BCCI’s statement makes it sound like he might be racing to get fit for second Test too… #CAXIvIND #AusvInd pic.twitter.com/Z39OSY8bxz

Foreign cricket personalities too expressed their concern.

This is not a good sign for Indian cricket. Prithvi Shaw rolled his ankle going for a catch in the outfield. Has gone off for scans…doesn’t look good @BCCI pic.twitter.com/ZLs2uqzTjf

Oh, man. This is Prithvi Shaw’s ankle today. Injuries are the worst thing about sport. I’ve done both ankles at basketball. It’s agony and they still give me trouble. Hope the kid can get back to full health. pic.twitter.com/W6s73NUWFa

The Indian opener was in line to play his first Test after a half-century in the practice match, 66 runs off 69 deliveries. After his successful debut against West Indies in October, cricket pundits were looking forward to see how he fares against the Aussie bowling attack in overseas conditions.
