South Africa beat England by 3 runs in 2nd ODI in a nerve-wrecking last over thriller | Watch Highlights

Jason Roy's 67 goes in vain as South Africa beat England by 3 runs in the last over thriller owing to his controversial 'obstructing the field' run out

It was a game that came right down to the wire as England and South Africa played the 2nd ODI of the three-match ODI series. The Proteas won the game by 3 runs. Despite Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow’s heroics chasing down the target of 175, England fell short of a few runs. Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan could not finish the game. Liam Livingstone and Liam Dawson were left with the task to score 12 in the last over. Livingstone got out to a terrible mix-up. Dawson made a comeback with a boundary off the fifth ball off Phehlukwayo’s over. But he could not finish off the match.

England lost their first wicket in the second over only as Sam Billings got out for 3 in the second over. But Roy continued his onslaught as he hammered South African bowlers for boundaries all around. Jonny Bairstow came to bat and he stitched a match-winning partnership with Roy. Bairstow got out for 47 from 37 balls as Morris struck again. Roy was taking England to a comfortable win, but a controversial run out forced him to go back to the pavilion for obstructing the field. As Roy left the field, the crowd was booing as initially it was given a dead ball.

Earlier South Africa got off to a good start after being put to bat first despite losing youngster Reeza Hendricks’ wicket in the fourth over only. JJ Smuts got off to a flier as he destroyed England bowling lineup in the powerplay overs. Though Smuts played a bit slow after that and got out for 45 from 34 balls. Mangaliso Mosehle too could not score big as he got out for 12.

AB de Villiers came back into the form as he scored a quickfire 46 off 20 balls hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes. David Miller got out cheaply but Farhaan Behardien scored well in the middle over. A minor batting collapse meant that the Proteas could not post a big total as they could manage to score 174 for 8 in 20 overs. Though Dane Paterson ended the first inning with a boundary.
