Missed By A Run: Why MS Dhoni Fans Are Not Happy With Virat Kohli

Now MS Dhoni will have to wait till 2019 to score 10,000 ODI runs for India

MS Dhoni has not been in the best of forms this season. There have been questions raised over his form, whether he should be dropped from the ODI side or not. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli overtook Dhoni’s number of runs in ODI against Windies in the five-match series. But that is not the reason why Thala’s fans are not happy with him.

Apparently, out of Dhoni’s 10,173 ODI runs, he has scored 9,999 runs for India. The remaining 174 were scored in the Afro-Asia Cup which were given ODI status by International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, he needed just 1 run to reach the 10,000 run mark.

In the fifth ODI, Indian bowlers pulled off a phenomenal performance as they rattled through the Windies batting lineup and bundling them out for a mere 104. India won the match easily. They lost just one wicket and chased down the total with 9 wickets left and 211 balls to spare.

However, the 37-year-old’s fans believed that Kohli could have given a chance to a struggling Dhoni, who has scored just 50 runs from 3 innings in the series. Moreover, he could have reached the 10,000 run milestone while batting for India. Now, he will have to wait for next year to score that one run.

Here are a few reactions:

Well Kohli, The Leader? MS gave captaincy to Ganguly during his last cricketing moments. With jst 1 run short, @msdhoni should’ve been promoted to reach the historical 10k feat today ‘Not everyone can be be #Dhoni

He should have been sent out to open today. Wonder why Kohli did not bestow the honour to Dhoni. He needed just one run.!

He could have also come in at no. 3. But instead, Virat Kohli came out when Shikhar got out.

It may seem unfair to Dhoni fans but in the Indian skipper’s defence, he perhaps wasn’t aware of the milestone.

And the focus before any match is how one can emerge victorious in the end, not discuss a player’s individual milestones. Dhoni is a team player, and if he is as selfless as we all believe him to be, chances are he wouldn’t have had a problem with it either.
