IPL 2018: Umesh Yadav Might Have Lost His Wicket Due To Wrong Replay By TV Umpire — Watch

IPL 2018, MI vs RCB: Umesh Yadav's batting average in IPL took a hit, courtesy TV operator

Umesh Yadav came to bat in the 18th over when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) needed 78 runs to win from 15 balls. He got out on the last ball of the same over while trying to hit a big shot off Jasprit Bumrah. Umesh’s wicket mattered little as RCB would have lost anyway if Yadav hadn’t been given out. But still, he might have survived if not for the TV umpire.

It has become a norm these days that the TV umpire looks at the replay to ensure that it was a legal delivery and the bowler doesn’t overstep. But, the TV umpire displayed the replay from the previous ball instead of the wicket-taking delivery. In the replay, Umesh was seen on the non-striker’s end, which was conclusive evidence that it was from the previous delivery.

Here’s the video of Umesh’s dismissal:

This is not the first incident in Indian Premier League (IPL) where something like this has taken place. Former Mumbai Indians’ (MI) skipper Sachin Tendulkar got out to Amit Mishra in a similar fashion in (add year).

The error occurred as the operator clicked twice because of which replay of the previous ball was shown instead of the delivery in question. Had the match been a close encounter between the teams, Yadav’s wicket would have had a huge impact on the game.

There is nothing International Cricket Council (ICC) can do about the goof-up as they do not pay broadcasters for the technology used for decisions in cases such as these.

Bumrah has a history of bowling no-balls, especially on wicket-taking deliveries. He bowled one in T20 World Cup 2016 semi-final against West Indies and in the Champions Trophy 2017. But it is because of the faux pas by the operator, Yadav’s batting average in the IPL has now plummeted.
