IPL 2018: Shreyas Iyer Is Delhi Daredevils’ New Captain, Gautam Gambhir Steps Down

IPL 2018: Gambhir feels it is time he acknowledges that things are not going well for Delhi Daredevils. He stepped down making way for Shreyas Iyer

Delhi Daredevils (DD) captain Gautam Gambhir has stepped down following their team’s dismal performances and now Shreyas Iyer is the new captain of the franchise. The change seems like a knee-jerk reaction owing to their poor performances in mind. Here is what Gautam Gambhir said,

“Coming to Delhi was an emotional decision. But I need time to reflect on what went wrong. When I joined KKR I was 28 and now times have changed, maybe that is the reason. It is never too early and never too late, I set high standards for myself and now that I am not coming good it is time I accept it and move on. The bell started ringing in the last game, where we lost. From here in, I will be setting individual goals and hope we turn things around.”

The newly-made captain Shreyas Iyer said,

“I am really happy with the responsibility I have been entrusted with. I love challenges and this is the right time for me to rise up and get counted. I was not thinking much about it, but maybe it is best suited for the team. There is so much I can learn from Ricky Ponting and Gautam Gambhir.”

Delhi Daredevils’ coach Ricky Ponting also spoke to media. He said,

“We have 8 games to go, so we still believe we can win this. We have the best talent and coaches. Just believe in the team, if things go downhill I will be the first one to resign. I have said that from day 1. A couple of overs here and their things could have been different. we lost wickets at the wrong time and that backfired. We have shown positive signs, but we have to be more consistent through the course of 40 overs. We have a lot of home games coming up so we will look to turn it around. We will take it for the next game. It is time for a change of direction. Gambhir has created an opportunity for an young Indian to show his mettle.”

RESPONSE TO GAUTAM GAMBHIR’S ACTION:

Dear All continuing where, I left yesterday this decision by @GautamGambhir to step down as #Captain for betterment of the team is legendary. Only the brave can take call like this! Deserves full respect for this decision a first in #India cricket. #TeambeforeIndividual #Respect
