India to host 2021 ICC Champions Trophy and 2023 World Cup: BCCI

It will be for the first time that India will alone host the World Cup in 2023. Earlier in 1987, 1996 and 2011, India co-hosted the world tournament with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on December 11 that India is going to host the 2023 World Cup. The Indian cricket board, in its Special General Meeting, has also announced that 2021 ICC Champions Trophy will also take place in India.

According to a report in The Indian Express, it will be for the first time that India will solely host the World Cup. Earlier in 1987, 1996 and 2011, India co-hosted the world tournament with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. India won the world cup twice; firstly in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and next in 2011 under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Besides, it will be the 2nd time that India will host the Champions Trophy, a tournament which is also known as the ‘mini world cup’. The 2006 Champions Trophy was hosted by India and the tournament was won by Australia. Till date, India has won this competition twice – first in 2002 (shared the trophy with Sri Lanka) and second in 2013 (defeated England in the finals).

Apart from hosting these two ICC events, India will also host Afghanistan for their first ever Test in 2019-2020. According to PTI, BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary attended the Special General Meeting in New Delhi after which he confirmed the tournament.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has confirmed the development and has thanked the Indian cricket board for the decision.

Afghanistan and Ireland were made full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in June. Afghanistan is now the 11th Test-cricket playing nation while Ireland is the 12th.
