Even as fans and cricket experts are clamouring for his coronation, former captain Sourav Ganguly has flatly refused to be the new BCCI President after Anurag Thakur was removed from the post by the Supreme Court this week. Ganguly on Tuesday said his name was coming up unnecessarily and that he cannot be the new President.
“My name is coming up unnecessarily. I don’t qualify. I have just completed one year (as the CAB president) and have got two more years left. I am not in the running,” he was quoted by PTI. On the question of implementation of Lodha Panel recommendations, Ganguly said the CAB had no option but to implement them.
On Tuesday, legendary former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had batted for the former captain. He spoke, “BCCI has got very good bench strength to take up the bigger rolls and one name that comes to my mind is Sourav Ganguly.”
“Remember, in 1999-2000 when Indian cricket was gripped by the match-fixing saga, Ganguly was given the Indian team captaincy and he turned it around,” Gavaskar told NDTV.
Ganguly led India to the final of ICC World Cup and series victory in Pakistan in 2004. He led India in 49 Test victories, out of which 21 ended in wins. He played 311 ODIs for India, scoring 11,363 runs in a 15-year-long international career.
The Supreme Court on Monday removed BCCI President Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke from their posts for obstructing implementation of Lodha reforms ordered by it.
After this unceremonious removal, Anurag Thakur said if the court felt that the BCCI could do better under former judges he could only say all the best!
