Sri Lanka is the surprise element ICC Champions Trophy 2017 as they chase down the second-highest total in the history of the tournament. Sri Lanka beat India by 7 wickets with 8 balls to spare. The Kennington Oval pitch was a batting paradise but it took a team effort from Sri Lankan batting lineup to beat India and keep their chances of reaching the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 finals alive. Skipper Angelo Mathews with his half-century and youngster Asela Gunaratne’s cameo chase down the target quite easily.
It was a big total that India set as Sri Lanka needed 322 to win the match. India got off to a perfect start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the wicket of Niroshan Dickwella. But, Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis rebuild the Sri Lankan innings and kept them on the track. They started to play freely after the powerplay overs. They put on a match-winning partnership of 159 for the second wicket. Both of them got runout in a similar fashion as they threw their wicket away.

Indian bowlers did not find their rhythm as they needed a strike bowler with them. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja’s overs seemed like liability later on in the innings. Skipper Kohli and Kedar Jadhav had to bowl a few overs to make up for it.

Earlier, India got off to a good start as openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan put on 138 runs for the first wicket and also broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly for the number of stands above 50 as an opening partnership in Champions Trophy. Rohit got out after his half-century but it was Dhawan who made the most of the chance and scored his 10th ODI century.

Skipper Virat Kohli got out for a duck whereas Yuvraj Singh got out for 7. But, MS Dhoni scored a quickfire knock fo 63 from 52 balls. Hardik Pandya got out early but Kedar Jadhav’s cameo helped India post a par score at Kennington, Oval.
